Receiving freelance payments in Bangladesh

Wise can’t receive for you and PayPal doesn’t appear to be available, so Bangladeshi freelancers choose between Upwork’s local bank transfer, Payoneer, and a USD wire. A wire arrives in dollars, up to half of which you can keep, and on eligible remittances Bangladesh Bank’s 2.5% incentive for individual freelancers is paid separately in taka by your bank. Fees and rules below checked 14 Oct 2026.

Among routes with every fee published or entered, Freelancer.com → Payoneer, then to a Bangladeshi bank lands most: at least $489.02.Among routes with every fee published or entered, Freelancer.com → Payoneer, then to a Bangladeshi bank lands most: at least $489.02.

“or less” means a fee on that route isn’t published and was counted as 0 until you enter it. “at least” means the converter publishes only a ceiling; “at the conversion ceiling, before the unpublished withdrawal fee” means conversion could cost less but that fee still comes off, so the real figure can be higher or lower; “$a to $b” is a published range. “fees exceed the amount” means nothing would land.

Worked example: $500.00 from Upwork

lands = (amount − platform fee) × (1 − conversion %), all in USD terms

The incentive is separate. It is 2.5% of the taka your bank credits, paid by the bank in taka after it checks the claim, so it isn’t added to the dollar figures above. On the Fiverr example it would be about $12.18 worth of taka. The circular we read doesn’t say whether it is paid on the part you keep in an ERQ account (a USD wire) or only on what is converted to taka, nor whether money that reached you through Payoneer’s local transfer qualifies; ask your bank before counting on it.

Bangladesh Bank rules that change the amount

Cash incentive: 2.5% for individual freelancers

Bangladesh Bank pays an export incentive of 2.50% to individual freelancers on software and ITES export earnings for 1 Jul 2026 – 30 Jun 2027 (6% for firms). It is paid in taka by your bank after the claim is checked; the earnings have to come in through a bank. Check the latest circular before counting on it. FEPD-1 Circular No. 17, checked 14 Oct 2026

Keep up to 50% in dollars (ERQ)

Service exporters may keep up to 50% of net export earnings in foreign currency for software, data entry/processing and other ICT services (30% for other services); the rest must be converted to taka. ERQ balances can pay for things like hosting, domains and software. Money that reaches you already in taka (Upwork’s local bank transfer, Payoneer’s local withdrawal) has nothing left to retain; only a USD wire or another foreign-currency inward remittance does. FEPD-1 Circular No. 22, checked 14 Oct 2026

No Form-C up to USD 20,000

Inward remittances up to USD 20,000 can be credited without Form-C; above that the bank needs an online Form-C (ICT). Banks check the work behind the money with emails, contracts, invoices (if any), platform statements and the inward remittance message. Keep your platform statements and client messages: they are what the bank asks for. FEPD-1 Circular No. 22, checked 14 Oct 2026

Tax

Income tax: exemption for IT freelancing, if you qualify

The Income Tax Act 2023 exempts income from “IT Freelancing” earned by a resident (or non-resident Bangladeshi) individual from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2027, on condition that all the business’s income, spending and investment goes through bank transfer. Withholding on inward service remittances (section 124) doesn’t apply to income exempt under that paragraph. We haven’t checked later amendments to the Act, so confirm the exemption still applies to you. Income Tax Act 2023 (NBR), checked 14 Oct 2026

This page quotes the official texts; it isn’t tax or legal advice, and the exemption date or incentive rate can change with the next budget or circular. See the terms.
